Italy Serie A to lift off this weekend

After much turmoil surrounding the men's Serie A which was post-poned one week due to major television rights problems, the women's 35th Serie A and B (2nd division) championships will kick-off on Saturday, September 14th at 4pm on soccer fields throughout Italy.

Today, September 12th, saw the official presentation of the championship at Rome's Olympic stadium. The event also included the award ceremony for Lazio, this year's champions), and the leading goalscorer title again for Patrizia "Scorpion" Panico

Other awards also included the winners of the Serie B championship.

Missing once again from this year's ceremony was Head Coach Carolina Morace who came under attack from some journalists because of Italy's less-than brilliant performance at the European championship as well as Italy's failed qualification to the U-19 and next year's World Cup (Italy will be standing still until the Athens 2004 games).

Natalina Levati, president of the Italian Female Soccer Division, emphasizing the fact that she was now heading in her 32nd year. led the show. She also proudly discussed the format of the 2nd UEFA Cup event (Levati is one of the originators of this tournament) which will have several games in Rome:-

Italy Serie A

The first championship began in 1968 and was won by Genova.

Lazio, the winningest squad in Italy, has won the "scudetto" (title)five times.

Bergamo, Lucca and Valdarno are some of the new faces joining the regulars of this seasons' Serie A .

Serie A2 championship
A Serie A2 championship has also been created, composed of 12teams. Some had been relegated down from the A and up from the B divisions. The Serie B, played regionally but on a national basis, is comprised of 4 groups with 12 teams each.
