F.A. Women's Premier League news
There
are no fixtures scheduled for the Christmas break. Tessa Hayward,
the F.A. Women's Leagues Co-Ordinator and Peter Hough, Chairman
of the FAWPL will be re-drawing the whole fixture list to try and
resolve the backlog caused by bad weather. There will be an announcement
on the new listings early next January. The priorities are to complete
the season as soon as possible for the benefit of the clubs, and
to allow the most time for National Team Head Coach Hope and the
squad to prepare for the European Championships.

Weather
causes fixture backlog in English FA leagues plus other news
The
'mighty gunners' take a big step towards the title, by beating the champions
5-0, who have changed their name and seem to be losing players for a
variety of reasons, including the Premier Club suspending a couple of
players for violent conduct. The FA have also to rule on the incident,
which surprisingly, did not include an opponent.
Because
of the backlog of fixtures, the English FA will hold a crisis meeting
in January, with an extension to the season beyond May 7th (Cup Final
Day) being an obvious option.
English
club Fulham, sponsored by owner of Harrods of London, signs more players
in bid to be top club
Fulham
FC. now includes Margunn Haugenes, 2 England Internationals and one
ex-U18 England International, as part of their bid to win the FA Cup
and be promoted to FA Premier League, South Division in 2001.

Arsenal
made another trip to Merseyside, and overwhelmed struggling Liverpool.
Angela Banks almost doubled her seasonís tally, with 4 more
goals. Marieanne Spacey scored 2, and Jayne Ludlow added another.
Irish International, Ciara Grant scored her first of the season,
and to make up the 10-0 scoreline, there 2 own goals by Liverpool
players.
Doncaster Belles set up the trip to play Arsenal next Sunday, with
a 3-1 win over Southampton. Karen Walker opened the scoring after
7 minutes, and then Mel Garside added a second. ëSaintsí
fought back in the second half, and Una Nwajei made it 2-1 on the
hour mark. The home victory was secured when Amanda Barr, one of
3 players to transfer from Everton in the summer, hammered home
a long range shot in the last few seconds.
Tranmere Rovers were the first team to meet Charlton in the league
and had chances to win, but had to settle for a 0-0 draw.
Everton had the better of the 3rd match to be held in the Liverpool
area, all against London clubs, and won 2-0, with ex-Belles defender
Chantelle Woodhead getting the first, mid-way through the 1st half.
Close to the end, Kelly Shimmin set up English Universities Jody
Handley (recently moved from the red side of Liverpool) for the
second.

With the Belles
having a rest day, instead of a trip to South East London to meet
Charlton, Arsenal moved 3 points clear at the top with a comfortable
victory over Sunderland. Angela Banks latched onto a superb through
ball by Faye White to score the first of her two goals as early as
the 4th minute. Sarah Wooliscroft and Faye White (both defenders)
added one each to give Arsenal a 3-0 half-time lead. Despite a spirited
start in the second half by the newly promoted side, Arsenal went
on to win 6-0, with goals by Angela Banks (her 5th of the season),
Marianne Spacey with a penalty and Clare Wheatley.
Southampton
took the lead with another goal from captain, Lyn Armstrong but it
ended all square against Everton, after Jodie Handley hit a disputed
equaliser.
Tranmere Rovers
moved up the table with a second win, after a trip to South Wales,
beating Barry Town 4-1. England International, Sue Smith scored two,
with Lyn Carter and Kelly Burns getting one each. Ayshea Martyn scored
the Barry goal.
English Universities
squad player, Amy Mason scored with a free- kick to give Millwall
all 3 points at Liverpool.

Two name changes to report, with last season's champions Croydon moving
to FA Premier League Club, Charlton Athletic. You will notice that
they did not play the first match, and there is
news circulating that Croydon Athletic (a Ryman Premier League Club)
are doing their best to block the move. This is not surprising as
the club, based at the Croydon Arena, which is owned by the
local council including a running track, have invested a certain amount
of money in the womens team over the last 5 years or so.
This probably explains the reason why Debbie Bampton moved to play
for Doncaster Belles, which is a club based some 150 miles north of
London. Croydon is in South London.
Promoted club
BS Kestrels become Sunderland and will wear the famous red and white
stripes, and may hope to play a match at the new "stadium of light."
There have been
many changes of personnel, which will be highlighted as the season
progresses.
Arsenal go straight
to the top of the league, after an impressive 5-0 win against Tranmere,
making sure not to lose early season matches which cost them the title
last season. Angela Banks scored twice, with new Irish International
Caroline Thorpe also getting 2. The other goal was scored by Jayne
Ludlow, a Welsh International
who joined from Southampton, who plays alongside captain Sian Williams
who is her team manager for Wales, and her coach for the English Universities
team.
Sunderland also
started well, winning 4-1 at Liverpool, with Donna Lanaghan getting
an early goal. One of Liverpool's new young players Sara Tyson then
equalised, but the prolific Melanie Reay regained the lead. Former
Liverpool player, Jody Baxter made it 3-1, and a new signing, Emma
Bell added the other.
Doncaster Belles
travelled to South Wales for a historic meeting with promoted Barry
Town, and after going behind to a goal by Ayshea Martyn, it took until
the 75th minute before Karen Walker equalised. Former Croydon player-manager
Debbie Bampton MBE (now 38 years old, who had reported she would retire)
scored the 2nd, and Mel
Garside made it 3-1.
At Totton, Southampton
Saints struggled to find the form of a few days before in a friendly,
and went behind to a Terri Warren goal, which flew into the roof of
the net from 20 metres. But after some strong half-time words by manager
Vanessa Raynbird, and new Director of Womens Football, Sue Lopez MBE
looking on, Saints rallied to
draw 1-1 after a looping header by the veteran captain, Lyn Armstrong
in the 75th minute.
The second week of fixtures will still not involve Charlton/Croydon
giving Sunderland a day off.
