prepare to start the match

China 4 Russia 2 ...........Match details
By Lei Ning

The Russian Team, 13 of them played in WWCup '99, arrived at Panyu three days before the match and stayed at the same hotel as the Chinese National Team.

For the first game, the starting line-ups from both sides were almost like WWCup '99 except that Sun Wen was on the bench., and midfielder Pan Lina from Shanghai made her debut for national team. The match was played in front of a crowd of over eight thousand in drizzling rain. The host team pressured the Russian team (blue jerseys) and within a few minutes both Chinese forwards, Zhang Ouying and Jin Yan had shots on goal. Russia side made some trouble with their counter attacks and the first goal was by Russia who were busy defending in 23th minute. Their No.11 Larissa broke away from the Chinese defenders who were playing an offside trap and put the ball in the net.

Just a few minutes later top striker Jin Yan equalized for China. The game was played almost completely in the Russian half because of their limited ability but faulty finishing prevented China from scoring. Ten minutes after the break, striker Zhang Oying scored another goal for China. Then superstar Sun Wen came on for newcomer Pan Lina. Top Russian player No. 10 Natalia headed the ball into the net after collecting a freekick from the right flank in 80th minute to even the game at 2-2. In the last ten minutes Sun Wen and an own goal from Karasseva helped China to win their first match of the millenium 4-2.

Chinese forward Jin Yan led the opening for China with a hat-trick and the other goals came from Zhang Ouying, Liu Ailing and Liu Ying. South Korea team didn't even get a chance to shoot and their one corner came from the Chinese center defender's fault.

The Chinese National Team consists of professional players and the Taiwan Team is made up of players from middle schools and colleges, so most people felt that they knew the result before the game began. But Chinese coaching staff did not dare to lower their guard, even meeting such a weak team. Over two thousand spectators showed up to watch the final on hot day (35°c). Most of them were women and children. The Asian Football Federation General Secretary, Velappan, also attended the match. The Chinese starting line-up was the same as the one at the final of WWC '99 except for PU Wei who came home a couple of weeks because of injury. In most of the first half the match was played in Taibei!'s half. Wang Liping scored the opening goal for China in the 16th minute. The other two goals were from Liu Ying's headers in the 43th and 45th minutes. The Chinese goalkeeper, Gao Hong, just touched the ball three times in the first half time. On the other hand, goalie Huang was busiest playern for the whole game. Although Taibei team lost the game, there was no doubt that Huang prevented many more scores from their opponent with her effort. Lin Chi from the Taibei side, who was in second place in the standing of scorers, had her first shot after 50 minutes and nearly scored. China side continued to dominate but the 3-0 score remain unchanged.

The Chinese National Team has won the Asian Women Championship seven times since1986. Liu Ying was the top scorer with 11 goals. Wen Lirong was the most valuable player of this Asian Championship.
