US Youth Soccer ODP National Championships kick off today with '87 Girls bracket featuring future U.S. National Team stars

The 2003 US Youth Soccer Olympic Development Program (ODP) National Championships kick off Friday at Plano's Russell Creek Park in suburban Dallas, Texas.

The 1987 age group makes its first appearance at this year's event with teams from California Youth Soccer Association - South, Maryland State Youth Soccer Association, North Carolina Youth Soccer Association, and Ohio Youth Soccer Association - North.

Semifinal games for the '87 Girls bracket kick off tomorrow when Ohio North and Cal-South play at 1 p.m. CT and Maryland meets North Carolina at 3 p.m. CT. The winner of each match plays Sunday at 8 a.m. CT for the US Youth

Soccer ODP National Championship.

Cal-South has four players from the U.S. U-17 Women's National Team pool and five players from two 2002 SNICKERS* US Youth Soccer National Championship teams. Slammers FC's Alexa Orand and Laguna Hills Eclipse's Kasey Moore each scored three goals at last summers SNICKERS* US Youth Soccer National Championships while leading their teams to their respective titles.

Orand and Moore, who were each awarded with the adidas Golden Boot at the 2002 SNICKERS* US Youth Soccer National Championships, join fellow U.S. U-17 Women's National Team teammates Kiara Bosio, Courtney Lewis, and Amy Rodriguez.

Maryland has U.S. U-16 Girls National Team players Ashley Myers and Meagan Holmes. Forward Brittany Berry's Bethesda Eclipse club team lost 2-1 in the 2002 SNICKERS* US Youth Soccer U-14 Girls National Championship match. Fourteen players play for the Bethesda Excel club team that won three SNICKERS* Maryland State Cup titles in the last four years. Both Holmes and midfielder Hayley Siegel were named to the US Youth Soccer ODP All-American team for their performances at November's Thanksgiving Interregional in Boca Raton, Fla.

North Carolina will be lead by forwards Kim Keener and Mallory Schmidt and defender Betsey Frederick. All three players competed for the Region III US Youth Soccer ODP team at the Thanksgiving Interregional, and Keener was the only Region III player selected to the US Youth Soccer ODP All-American team from that event.

The Ohio-North team could be the "Wilde" card of the '87 Girls bracket. Look for three-time Region II US Youth Soccer ODP midfielder Hanna Wilde, U.S. U-17 Women's National Team midfielder Courtney Rosen, and forward Caitlin O'Hara to help pace the attack. Goalkeeper Amy O'Hara, Caitlin's twin sister, will direct the defense.
