Madison Rumba Win Schwan's USA Cup

The Madison Rumba Under-15 girls team defeated the Utah Lightning from Salt Lake City, 2-1 last Saturday morning to win the championship of the 17th Annual Schwan's USA Cup. The USA Cup is the largest soccer tournament in the Western Hemisphere, featuring over 700 teams from around the world in a week long competition at the NSC Sports complex just north of Minneapolis in Blaine, MN.

The Rumba defeated teams from Minnesota, South Dakota, Illinois and Utah on the way to the final showdown with the Utah State Champions, including a dramatic semi-final shoot-out against the St. Paul Blackhawks. Goalie Jess Vetter made a critical save, and all 5 Rumba shooters converted (Jenna Mitby, Kristin Lackner, Ruth Pinilla, Kimberly Wiepz and Kelty Carew) to allow them to go through to the quarter finals where they easily dispatched the Chicago Attack 2-0. Goals in the final came from Emily Walsh and Kimberly Wiepz. Utah scored late in the game off a free kick, but the Rumba
defense held tight. The week was marked by great defensive play from Dana Gudel and Mikka Harden as the Rumba went with 5 wins and 1 draw, on 9 goals for and 2 goals against for the tournament.
