Game
The 5th place match against Canada and Finland kicked off at 4 p.m. central
amongst the crowds gathered to cheer on their countries as well as spect
ators at the Houston Challenge Soccer Club "Shootout" tournament, also
played at Meyer Park. The Canadian team had posted one win against China,
and Finland was 0-2 as the two teams prepared to face each other in the
final round. The first goal for Canada started with a nice header on goal
by Carla Dolomont that hit the crossbar and came back out. Dolomont kept
the ball and passed to teammate Candace Chapman who put a clever back
heel to the ball into the back of the net in the 12th minute. In the 25th
minute Canadian Heather Smith shot from right field about 25 yards out
sailing over the Finnish defender's head, grazing the left crossbar into
the net past the keeper. After a goal by Finnish player Nina Hietanen
in the 23rd minute, teammate Annica Sjolund scored a goal from a penalty
kick in the 45th minute. With the score tied, Canada attempted to step
up their efforts to beat Finland, but Finland came back in the 49th minute
with a shot by Taru Hakala from a corner kick which ricocheted from the
keeper's grasp back into the action in the box allowing Sanna Malaska
to finish the action with a header into the net, resulting in a win for
Finland, 3-2.
"We really wanted
to win this game; it's nice to go home with the victory. In seeing how
the Canadians played during this tournament, the girls saw that they could
beat them" said Finnish coach Inka Huttunen. "Our two
youngest players scored two goals in this game. It was good for them to
see that they really can fight with the older players."
