July 12, 2001 The Young Matildas (the National Youth Team) kick off their Under-19 Youth World Cup campaign The Young Matildas (the National Youth Team) kick off their Youth World Cup campaign in earnest next month with a four-team international tournament in the NSW Central Coast region. Recently-appointed National Youth Coach Mike Mulvey will lead against the senior National Teams of Singapore and Vietnam, plus the NSW Institute of Sport outfit. Mulvey, who flew to Japan yesterday as part of their week-long overseas tour will name his Under-19 National Team soon after his return. Four new players were selected for the Japan tour: Emma Davison, Katie Gill, Amber Neilson, and Stacey Stocco. They and Olympian Kate McShea could play a key role in the Young Matildas' campaign. For both Singapore and Vietnam this visit downunder will be the first time they will have played against an Australian women's team. As part of their preparations for the South-East Asian Games in September and the Asian Championships in December, the two nations will present an intriguing challenge for the Young Matildas. In growing synergy with Schoolgirls Soccer, the tournament will be conducted concurrently with the Australian Secondary Schools Soccer Championships in Gosford, and will present a real showcase of the best young talent from around the country. Warren Fisher, Chief Executive of Women's Soccer Australia, said, "The staging of an international tournament side by side with a major event like the Australian Secondary Schools Soccer Championships reflects a close partnership between school sport and Womens Soccer Australia." He added, "This partnership can lead soccer to becoming the most popular participation sport for girls at school level in Australia, as it is now in most parts of the world." The international event kicks off 5 August with games to be played at Pluim Park after the Schoolgirl fixtures. Other matches, including the playoffs on 11 August, will be held at North Power Stadium. The Oceania qualifiers are scheduled for April 2002 in Tonga. Proposed Draw
