Game
The Championship match brought two old time rivals together once again.
The US Youth Soccer All-America Team and the US Soccer National
team were both undefeated in the tournament, and ready to fight. When
the whistle blew the best match of the event unfolded before the eyes
of standing room only crowds lining all available spots. The first half
was a non stop charge by both teams' offense matched with equal strategy
and resistance by the defense. The US Youth Soccer team's three central
players dominated the midfield causing problems for the National team.
National team forwards tried going wide through mid-fielders Chalupny
and Osborne, but the All-America midfielders did a great job of adjusting
and keeping them back. Neither team would give an inch and the action
and emotion on the field was echoed by the screaming fans in the stands.
In the 60th minute,Tarpley
scored her first goal of the match from just outside the penalty box,
putting it easily past the Keeper into the right corner. Sixteen minutes
later, the second goal for the National team was scored off a corner kick
taken by Weiss which was knocked around and out to Tarpley who turning
sharply, hit it off the crossbar into the goal from five yards out. The
third goal in the 89th minute was scored by mid-fielder Osborne after
a hard run and a shot that befuddled the keeper.
"This has been an
incredible week for all the teams that came. Both the All-America team
and the National Team get tremendous experience out of coming to this
event" said US National Team coach, Tracey Leone. "It's a great opportunity
for the fans to see what we think at this point are the top 36 players
in the nation."
The tournament ended
with the presentation of the adidas Golden Glove trophy awarded to National
Team keeper Ashlyn Harris, and the Golden Boot trophy to China's lead
scorer, Han Duan. The beautiful crystal adidas Cup trophy was taken home
by the US National Team, until the teams meet again at the next US Youth
Soccer adidas Cup in 2003.
