Article Index 2001 May 25, 2001 Susan Ryan and Jerry Smith to coach the OPDP All-America Team in adidas Cup "Along with the other two Regional head coaches, Sue Ryan and Jerry Smith make up the (US Youth Soccer) National ODP Coaching Staff," said US Youth Soccer Girls ODP Committee Chair Kay Catlett. "Both are extraordinarily talented and are known across the country as people who know how to identify, train and develop the elite adolescent female soccer player." US Youth Soccer Girls ODP State Administrators Vicky Brown (Kansas) and Cherry Murphy (North Carolina) will serve as the All America Team Administrators. Brown is the assistant to US Youth Soccer's Region II Girls ODP Administrator Bonnie Skover, and serves as director for the Region II Summer Camp. Murphy, who accompanied the All America team on its recent successful European tour, is the long time assistant to US Youth Soccer's Region III Girls ODP Administrator Don Gurney. She has a statewide award for outstanding soccer administration named after her. "We can't say enough about US Youth Soccer and adidas for putting on this event," Ryan said. "They're the infrastructure and grassroots of the national ODP program, which is the foundation of the pyramid of success for these girls." Ryan, in her 16th year as a professor and the head coach at SUNY Stony Brook, coached the Seawolves to an Eastern Collegiate Athletic Conference playoff berth in 1998. She was named Stony Brook's 1998 Women's Athletics Coach of the Year for the second time (1994 peviously). Ryan holds a U.S. Soccer Federation "A" license and National and Advanced National licenses from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, and is the head coach of US Youth Soccer's Region I Olympic Development Program. She earned the 2000 National Youth Coach of the Year by US Youth Soccer and NSCAA for coaching the Northport Piranha team that won national titles in 1997 and 1999. Smith, the U.S. Under -21 National Team Head Coach and husband of Brandi Chastain has built Santa Clara into one of the top college programs in the history of women's soccer. Under Smith the Broncos have qualified for 12 consecutive NCAA tournament appearances, including seven trips to the NCAA Final Four. Smith, who coached one of the US Youth Soccer ODP teams at last year's adidas Cup, said he was looking forward to coaching the US Youth Soccer team again. "Last year, the players didn't want the event to end. By the time the week was over, the team was still wanting to keep training and playing together" he said. "Each US Youth Soccer All America team player has come up through the US Youth Soccer ODP. These girls are handpicked as the superstars of girls youth soccer in America. It's enjoyable for me to have a chance to see these girls work hard through their state and regional ODP programs and find themselves here playing on a national team for the United States."
