Young American goalkeeper plays for Spain in both their U-18 and Women's National Teams
By Colin Aldis

Spain U-18 1 - Norway U-18 1
On Monday evening April 3, 2000 in the rain, Spain played Norway (likely favourites as they reached thefinal 4 tournament last year), but this year it ended 1-1. The match had a red card, when Lise Klaveness pushed over her Spanish opponent following a tackle.

One interesting fact for USA residents, is that the Spanish keeper is American, but her grandfather or great grandfather used to coach the local pro team of Sevilla. Father Jo Grech does not talk about his playing career, but is proud of the fact that his daughter has made the national team, seniors as well as U-18. Last Saturday she helped the team win 2-0 in Holland, which could help Spain avoid the tricky 2 leg home/away play off next September/October.

England U-18 2 - Republic of Ireland U-18 2
In the second match, England drew 2-2 with Republic of Ireland, with Amy Sudan being shown the red card after giving away a penalty, we assume she tackled a player in a goal scoring position. Considering England beat Ireland 5-0 last year, on a wet evening in Telford, this was an interesting result and the matches on 5th and 7th April will decide who goes to the Final tournament in August.

Two more mini-tournaments are scheduled for week beginning April 17th April. The other one must be completed by May 17th.

UEFA U-18 Mini Tournament in Spain on April 5, 2000
By Colin Aldis

On match day 2, 5th April 2000, with the rain falling the local heroes Spain had a great result, to beat England 2-0.

Our playing reporter, said the first goal came from the penalty spot, after a handball, and the 2nd came from a long ball from the keeper, being flicked on and a touch passed the English keeper, ie route one soccer devised by an Englishman?

In the other match, played a few miles away, Norway found the goal twice as well, Lene Storlokken getting the first after 18 minutes, and 2nd half substitute, Solfrid Anderson getting the 2nd in the 60th minute.

The final matches are due to be played on Friday 7th April 2000, both starting at same time, with Spain on top on goals scored with Norway 2nd. Under UEFA rules, goals are less important than the result between the 2 teams who are level on points. BUT Norway and Spain have 4 points and same goal difference of +2, so the scoreline in their final matches will be crucial.

Norway play England, and Spain play Republic of Ireland.
