Trevians SC from Chicago suffered a humiliating defeat against the Norwegian team; Athene Moss. The Norwegians took the lead half way into the first period, and didn't let go after that. Athene Moss is an experienced team with lots of players from the Norwegian proffessional soccer league. This certainly didn't make it any easier for the Chicago girls.

Fortunately the other opening games have gone better for the Trevians. They beat Halden (another Norwegian team) 1-0 and drew against Abildsø Tuesday evening.

The 16 and 17- year olds from Illnois are still hoping that their luck will turn later on in the tournament. They enjoy being in Norway, and are particularly impressed with the fjords, mountains and all the blond people. Coach, Paul Moretta, says: "The people in Norway have been great, very welcoming."
The girls say it's nice and quiet here, not noisy like in Chicago. "Oslo seems more like a small town", says Lisa Jorjorian.

The reason they came to Norway Cup is because they were told this was the world's best soccer tournament for girls. The Trevians also played some friendly matches in Holland before they came to Oslo last week. One thing they have noticed since their arrival in Europe is the different style of play over here.

"It's a more aggressive, physical style of soccer here. There's more speed. They generally play the ball quicker." says Paul Moretta.
The girls totally agree. "There are also a lot of different rules that we were unaware of. You can get away with a lot more here than in the States. You can play more physically without being penalised. For example you can grab jerseys."
"Also, the style of play is different here. There are more long balls, kick and run type of play. We normally build up and cross it, with more long balls at the top ." says Becky Macey.

The Trevian girls worked hard to save money for their European trip. To raise money they did 2 carwashes, a garage sale, a flower sale and they worked after school. Most of the parents helped out to pay for the trip but the girls use their own spending money. And they soon discovered how expensive everything is in Norway.

After the 5-0 defeat today Lisa, Meredith, Becky, Liz, Jessie and the rest of the team were off to drown their sorrows in the swimming pool and to cool off in the hot weather. Then tonight they will be getting ready for the big disco in downtown Oslo. Norway Cup isn't all about soccer -- socialising is a very big part of it.
