| SHASTA'S BIOGRAPHY | ||
From her participation in the US Olympic Development Program to playing in major youth tournaments, from guest playing for club teams throughout the US to attending top college soccer camps such as Stanford and Notre Dame, Shasta Walker draws on her wealth of experience as an elite youth player in her role as regular columnist and contributor for the printed edition of Women's Soccer World Magazine. |
She started playing soccer in 1994, at age 11, and in nine months made the ODP state team, and within eighteen months was a starting player for the state champion U13 Boys' Arkansas Comets. Shasta is a three time state champion --most recently as a member of the Tulsa Soccer Club, advancing to the semi-final round of the '99 Snicker's Regional Cup -- and a six time state ODP and Regional Camp participant. She has guest played for club teams from San Diego, Houston, and Tulsa. She currently plays for the U-17 Boys' Arkansas Comets and is a frequent guest player for the U18 Girls' Memphis Futbol Club. In 1996, she was selected for the IronKids Bread Team by gold medalists, Janet Evans, Mark Spitz, Evelyn Ashford, and Mark Gorski, as one of the top ten kids in the US who best exhibit the Olympic Spirit. She toured Washington, DC with the four gold medalists and met with President Clinton and the '96 US Olympic team at the White House -- including soccer gold medalists, Briana Scurry, Brandi Chastain, and Mia Hamm. Like WSW editor, Roger Rogers, Shasta was concerned about the lack of media coverage and available information for girls' soccer. In February of 1997, at age 13, she contacted the magazine with article and marketing ideas. Her first article appeared in the May/June 1997 issue, and she was given her own regular column, WAY TO GO!, in the following issue. Over the years, her column has covered subjects like recruiting, ODP, soccer camps, and parent involvement in youth soccer. Her articles have been reprinted in several US youth soccer publications. Shasta's involvement in the world of soccer and the magazine continues to grow. In 1999, she represented Women's Soccer World at the USYSA National Convention in Chicago, and worked for USSF Protocal Manager, Julian Stanculescu, at WWC '99 in Los Angeles. Shasta will be Contributing Editor for Women Soccer World's new on-line sister magazine, Girls' Soccer World |
