March 16, 2001 Three Washington State University Freshman
Boyce, Hobby and Wirtz honored by the Mortar Board for academic success The Board said it chose to recognize outstanding freshman scholars because students need recognition early on in their college careers. The Mortar Board is involved in scholarship, leadership and service. All three freshmen who received the scholastic honors were contributing members to the Cougars 13-7 season. Boyce and Hobby both started all 20 games for the Cougars on defense. Hobby was named the Cougars defensive player of the year while Boyce scored three goals for the Cougars, the most of any Cougar defender in 2000. Wirtz was injured in the early part of the season, but came in and made an impact in the end, playing in seven games while dishing out an assist. The Cougar team as a whole has the fifth highest cumulative GPA of all sports at WSU, and the fifth among women's sports with a 3.23. |
