January 19, 2001 UCLA Head Coach Jillian Ellis named as NSCAA/adidas Coach of the Year Jillian Eliis was named the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) / adidas Coach of the Year at the NSCAA National Convention in Indianapolis, Ind. In her second season at UCLA, Ellis guided the Bruins to their first-ever Final Four appearance in 2000 before losing to North Carolina, 2-1 in the finals of the College Cup in San Jose. UCLA ended the season with its highest ranking in the eight-year history of the program as the Bruins finished at No. 2 in the final rankings with a 19-4-1 overall record. Ellis is the first UCLA women's coach, and the first coach from the Pac-10, to be named. Ironically, she is also the Head Coach of the U.S. Under-21 National Team a position that Lauren Gregg held with great success. Gregg was the first woman ever to win this same NSCAA award in 1990 when she was the Head Coach of a winning program at the University of Virginia, a position that she handed over to the present U.S. National Team Head Coach April Heinrichs.
