Fifteen
Girls named to AYSO 's First All-American Team
Fifteen girls have
been chosen to play on the American Youth Soccer Organization's very first-ever
All-American Team. The players were selected from a field of nearly 300
teenagers who recently participated in AYSO's College Athlete Program
(CAP). Each player began the rigorous selection process by first participating
in a CAP Audition; then attending a week-long CAP Center; and finally
being chosen to play in this winter's CAP National Competition. The players
were evaluated on their soccer skills, teamwork, and leadership qualities. An
Under-19 Team was selected to represent AYSO.
The All-American
Team will be introduced at AYSO's National Annual General Meeting in Phoenix
this May and again at AYSO Day at the Los Angeles Galaxy game on June
17, 2000. The team will spend their summer training with AYSO National
Coach John Ouellette in Arizona and California before their first appearance
at the Kanga Cup in Australia.

Linda
Whitehead named as Head Coach
of the University of Northern Iowa
The University of
Northern Iowa Athletic Department has appointed Linda Whitehead as Head
Coach of its new women's soccer program. The program will begin play in
the fall of 2000.
Whitehead
has experience starting a team at the college level, serving as the initial
head coach at the University of Tennessee-Chattanooga the past four seasons.
Last season the Lady Mocs finished with a program-best for wins. Prior
to UTC, Whitehead served as Head Women's Soccer Coach at Saint Mary's
University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada for four years, where she was
named 1992 Conference Coach of the Year after being named AUAA Champions.
From 1991-92, she was Head Women's Soccer Coach at the University of Victoria
in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada, where her 1992 team won the Terry
Price Cup. She was also Head Coach of the University of Western Ontario
from 1990-91.
Whitehead's experience
on the playing field includes two years at the University of Western Ontario,
where she was named captain and MVP of her team. She also was a four-time
winner of the Ontario Championship during her time with the London (Ontario)
Concorde women's soccer team.
"We're really
excited," said Associate Athletic Director Kevin Buisman. "The search
committee did an outstanding job, and it is to their credit that we
were able to work fairly quickly through this process and attract somebody
of Linda's caliber. I think Linda brings outstanding credentials to
the program, and it was an obvious bonus for us to attract someone that
had Division I experience plus the startup experience that will allow
our program to hit the ground running and get our program out to a fast
start."
Plans call for
UNI to begin play this fall, initially offering a limited number of
scholarships that will grow over a five-year timetable. UNI officials
hope to attract an initial roster of 16-18 players that will include
freshmen, transfers and members of UNI's current club team. Several
locations are under discussion for where the team will play, including
several on-campus sites and the possibility of a limited number of games
being played at the new Cedar Valley Soccer Complex currently under
development.
"People we talk
to about women's soccer think we have a chance to be pretty good pretty
quickly," said Athletic Director Rick Hartzell. "There are a lot of
players around. We'll focus on the Waterloo-Cedar Falls area and try
to build a program with some local roots."
