Biography Extra
By Aaron Heifetz

Lilly debuted for the USA in just the 16th match ever played by the U.S. women on Aug. 3, 1987, at the age of 16 years, 12 days, making her the second youngest player ever to don a U.S. jersey behind Mia Hamm. Through her 13 years on the national team, the left-footed, left-sided midfielder has established herself as one of the top players in the world with consistent stellar and dynamic play while compiling almost inhuman numbers. She has helped the USA win two Women's Word Cups, an Olympic gold medal and numerous international tournaments. Her 83 career international goals ranks her third in U.S. history behind Hamm and Michelle Akers, and she is second in career points, also having dished off 63 assists in her career for a total of 229 points. Lilly has scored five goals for the USA in Women's World Cup competition. She has played in all 18 of the USA Women's World Cup matches, starting 17. Lilly had by far her most productive year scoring in 1999, pounding in 20 goals with eight assists to become one of just four U.S. players to score 20 or more goals in a year. She was the first American woman to reach 100 career caps and became the world's all-time leader in international soccer appearances on May 21, 1998, in Kobe, Japan, when she played in her 152nd international match, breaking Norwegian Heidi Stoere's all-time world record of 151 games. Despite not playing a match for the national team in 1989 or 1992, at 28-years-old, Lilly continues to put the record into the stratosphere, untouchable by any player except for Hamm, who is just 11 games behind her. Lilly has started an amazing 191 of the 198 games she has played for the USA, missing only 13 matches during that span, and has played the full 90 minutes in an astounding 161 of those games, including all six 1999 Women's World Cup games. She has played in 87% of the matches ever played by the U.S. Women's National Team. She also owns the U.S. record for the longest start streak at 62 games.
